Bring something well-worn, faded, stained, or underused and give it another life through indigo with guidance from Stefania Zwirello.
In this hands-on introductory workshop, participants will learn the basics of natural indigo dyeing and work with a prepared indigo vat to renew clothing or household textiles they already own.
Participants may bring up to two pounds of suitable textiles made primarily from cotton, linen, hemp, silk, or wool. Existing colour, stains, seams, stitching, fibre content, and previous wear will influence the final results, making each piece unique.
Participants will receive preparation instructions before the workshop. All items must be thoroughly pre-washed at home and brought well soaked in a waterproof bag (ziploc works well for this).
No previous natural dyeing experience is required.
What to bring
Up to two pounds of prepared clothing or household textiles
Waterproof bag with your fully soaked items
Clothing that you don’t mind getting stained (this is not guaranteed to happen but it could!)
Notebook
Please note
cotton, linen, hemp, silk, or wool will produce the strongest results. Polyester and acrylic generally will not take the dye.
Two pounds may be several lightweight shirts, one heavy sweatshirt, or one pair of jeans. Weight, rather than the number of items, will determine the limit.
Indigo dyeing is experimental, and uniform results cannot be guaranteed. Existing colours may shift rather than becoming a clear blue, and indigo may not completely conceal stains.
