Join the West Kootenay Fibreshed for a hands-on nettle processing workshop in Hills, BC, exploring the journey from nettle stem to plant fibre and handmade cordage.

Held outdoors on personal property, this introductory workshop will guide participants through two approaches to working with nettle fibre. We will use fresh nettles to make simple cordage and work with pre-retted nettles to explore dry fibre processing. Participants will learn how to begin separating fibre from the woody stem, how to handle nettle at different stages of preparation, and how processing choices affect the final material.

This workshop is designed for beginners and curious fibre folks who want to better understand where plant fibre begins. If you’ve worked with nettles before and want a refreshed or to work with the material in a group setting this workshop is also for you! Together, we will slow down and follow nettle through several stages of preparation, learning how timing, retting, handling, and patience shape the fibre.

By working with both fresh and pre-retted nettles, participants will gain a practical introduction to the process and leave with enough skill and confidence to continue experimenting on their own.

Note: This workshop takes place outdoors on personal property. Please come prepared for uneven ground, changing weather, and hands-on plant fibre processing. Participants should bring a water bottle, weather-appropriate clothing, closed-toe shoes, and gloves if they have them.
