Learn how loose fibre becomes yarn using one of the oldest and most portable spinning tools.
In this two-hour beginner workshop, participants will be introduced to the foundations of spinning with a drop spindle guided by Facilitator, Stefania Zwirello. Together, we will explore how twist creates yarn, how to draft fibre, and how to control and wind newly spun yarn onto the spindle.
The workshop will begin with the park-and-draft method, allowing participants to practise each movement separately before bringing them together. There will be plenty of time for hands-on experimentation, individual support, and troubleshooting.
Drop spindle spinning is an accessible way to begin handspinning. The tool is compact, affordable, and easy to carry, making it possible to practise at home, outdoors, while travelling, or in short pockets of time.
No previous spinning or fibre experience is required.
All materials are included, and each participant will leave with their own drop spindle and fibre to continue practising at home.
Participants will learn
How a drop spindle works
How twist transforms fibre into yarn
How to attach fibre to a leader yarn
How to draft fibre
How to start and control the spindle
How to wind yarn onto the spindle
How to troubleshoot common beginner challenges
What is included
A drop spindle to use during the workshop and take home
Prepared corriedale fibre
Leader yarn and shared tools
All materials are provided.
Participants may wish to bring a water bottle, notebook, or reading glasses and other personal visual supports.
Please note…
Handspinning takes practice. Participants should not expect to create perfectly even yarn during their first session. The goal of this workshop is to understand the process, become comfortable using the spindle, and leave with the tools and confidence to continue exploring on their own.
