Flax to Linen Workshop | Winlaw

Join the West Kootenay Fibreshed for a hands-on Flax to Linen Workshop focused on learning how flax grown in our community flax plot is transformed into usable linen fibre through traditional hand-processing tools.

Location: Slocan Valley Threads Guild

This workshop centres on the use of flax-processing tools to move flax from stalk to prepared fibre. Participants will learn and practice the key stages of processing, including breaking, scutching, and hackling, gaining a practical understanding of how linen fibre is produced before spinning or weaving can occur.

The tools used in this workshop were hand-built using local materials by Scott Fettes of Meadow Creek and were made possible through the generous support of Columbia Basin Trust and Kootenay Savings Credit Union. These tools are part of the West Kootenay Fibreshed’s community tool library and are intended for shared learning, demonstration, and skill-building across the region.

This workshop is rooted in bioregional fibre systems and soil-to-soil thinking, highlighting the labour, time, and collective effort involved in producing linen from locally grown flax. The focus is on process, material knowledge, and reconnecting with a historically significant fibre practice in the West Kootenays.

No prior experience is required. This workshop is well suited for fibre artists, growers, educators, and anyone curious about local fibre systems and traditional textile processes.

Participants will:

  • Gain hands-on experience with breaking, scutching, and hackling

  • Develop an understanding of linen as a bioregional fibre

All tools and materials are provided. Participants should wear clothing suitable for hands-on work and bring curiosity and care for working with natural materials.
